It was Peter the Great's intention that Petersburg, which he founded in 1703, be the gate to the Baltic and the future capital of the Russian Empire. The cover of this box bears a fine and elegant painting depicting the city's harbor. Frigates are shown sailing past the Peter and Paul Fortress, Peter's Summer Palace and the Stock Exchange building, which were the main architectural sites of the city in his day. Europeans are still amazed at the beauty of this most northernly large city on earth. The lacquer boxes are made by modern masters in accordance with age-old canons of traditional Russian painting.
